About
How it all started?
It appears that Florence Falk-Dickler of Teaneck and Marge Wyngaarden of Westwood were attending meetings of the New York Chapter of NOW in the spring of 1970. They chose to start a chapter closer to home after becoming tired of the commute. A handful of men and women arrived at Marge's house after they placed a classified ad in the newspaper. Soon after, they held a local demonstration at Garden State Plaza that was modeled after the August 1970 March on Fifth Avenue commemorating the 50th anniversary of women's suffrage. The local march was a huge success, just like the NYC march, and NNJ NOW was on its way.

By 1971, the chapter had six consciousness-raising groups, including one for men, and Marge, who was now the vice president of NNJ NOW, was a candidate for assembly. Our "Barefoot and Pregnant" Award was given by the chapter to companies and services that denigrated or discriminated against women.
We believe all women can embrace who they are,
can define their future, and can change the world.
Our Pupose
The Northern New Jersey chapter's purpose is to eliminate discrimination against women based on their race, ethnic origin, age, marital status, sexual or affectional preference/orientation, or parenthood. This includes empowering women to fully participate in the mainstream of American society NOW and exercise all of their rights and responsibilities in all spheres of citizenship, public service, employment, education, and family life.
